I have a line for a file, and it contains the icons sb-chk.xpm and
sb-objod.xpm. (The textual representation appears to be * for sb-chk
and ! for sb-objod.)
What do these icons mean?

AFAIK a '*' stands for files checked out of a version control system,
a '!' for a file w/o an up-to-date object file whereas '#' denotes a
file that has an up-to-date object file.
