Try it with `emacs -q --no-site-file' also try:
M-x list-load-path-shadows RET
as well as (after loading ebrowse):
C-h f ebrowse-copy-list RET
and tell us what comes out.
I just can't bring myself to believe that it can be caused
by something else. Of course, it might be a problem with Debian's
Emacs package, although that sounds unlikely.
