Eg http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-diffs/2014-11/msg00436.html http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-diffs/2014-11/msg00375.html ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 16+ messages in thread

This has nothing to do with the asterisk. The first paragraph of the log message is taken to be the summary. You get the same behaviour with git format-patch or git log --oneline. Seems dumb to me for a thing that sends out mails not to include a check on subject length, so I'll probably attempt to patch that in. Also seems dumb to me to ignore line-breaks, and insist on paragrpah breaks, but whatever. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 16+ messages in thread

Please don’t. Git was designed around the patch emailing workflow. One commit is one email message. The commit message summary is the subject. The rest of the commit message is the message body. The actual diffs are either attached or included inline. The subject line’s role is to draw reader interest in a mailing list, and to serve as an anchor for subsequent searches via the list of messages. Similarly, the commit message summary’s role is to draw reviewer interest, and to serve as an anchor for searches via git log and gitk. Many graphical MUAs and Git repository browsers handle long subjects and summaries just fine. Instead of arbitrarily chopping the subject line, we should all be writing commits with concise and meaningful summaries. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 16+ messages in thread

That's why the recommendation for git is to limit the first line to 50 characters. This of course conflicts with the common practice in Emacs to simply use the ChangeLog entry as the commit message. I personally try to write the commit messages in a git-friendly format and append the ChangeLog entry (if it is necessary) as its own paragraph. I would suggest to make this common practice to improve the compatibility with the existing git tools. But of course we can't got back and change all of the history to confirm. btw. there is a git-commit-mode (used by magit), which checks for this rule. That's way to few for a meaningful summary of the commit. I normally need at least 70, sometimes more. > This of course conflicts with the common practice in Emacs to simply > use the ChangeLog entry as the commit message. There's no such practice. Committers are requested to come up with a summary line, and use the ChangeLog entry below that, as a separate paragraph. The ChangeLog entry can serve as the summary line only if it's a single line, and there's nothing to be said except what that one line does. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 16+ messages in thread

"First line summarizes the commit" is fine by me. What I find dumb is the requirement for that first line to be followed by a blank line, not a new line. Because who needs to write 50 characters like this? For example, just now I wanted to use a commit log which was about 1.5 lines long in total, but had a natural break (for a comma) at the end of the first line. Rather than rewrite it as "1 + blank + 1.5 lines", I simply dropped the last half line. If a newline marked the end of the summary/title/whatever, then log --oneline (and emacs-diffs subjects) would look fine, with no action needed. But obviously it isn't going to change, so we need to learn new habits, and write little tools to enforce said habits. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 16+ messages in thread

I thought it was just the first line; and I assumed the email program was just buggy in this respect.
