I always used Aioe.org:

(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "Aioe.org"))

But, at another site, I heard

What I can say, I never had any such problems.

This is far from complete but a good one to use is:

news.gmane.org

It has a lot of useful feeds.

How do you quantify this "complete" property and how does that
affect me? I'm using aioe.org - how complete is it, and if it is
incomplete, does this mean I'm missing out posts, or that some
people on the same groups can't see my posts? That would be -
really bad (both).

Try `freenews.netfront.net'. FWIW it seems to be from a Hong
Kong based company.

You can also read a recent message by E. Fraga on the gnus.user mailing
list entitled

"experience setting up gnus for the first time"

b) What's the weblink for information about the gnus.user mailing list?...

Actually it's gnus.general

You can access it through gmane (mail to news system) which in turn is
accessible through a web interface. Here is the link to the article

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/83478/match=experience+setting+up+gnus

The first step in setting up gnus is using gnus to access the gnus
newsgroup. It's sort of like a zen koan.

(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.gmane.org"))

Start gnus.

"^" to get into the server buffer. Move to the line reading
{nntp:news.gmane.org} and hit RET.

Wait.

Search for gmane.emacs.gnus.user. Hit "U" on that line. Hit "q" twice.
Hit "g".

Enlightenment!

E
