I just did an "archive install" type of upgrade from 10.3 panther to
10.4 tiger. Many questions:

1. Carbon Emacs breaks. I use it a lot, Any solution?

2. The x11 that came with tiger also doesn't work (icon bounces once
and quits). Any ideas?

3. My home folder, applications I had placed on /MyApps, fink stuff in
/sw etc are of course untouched. What do I need to save from previous
system before I can trash the folder? All I can thibk of is /usr/local.
Anything else?

Thanks

Check to see if a more recent version is available, and if so,
install it.

It works fine for me. Did you install the update to get to 10.4.2?
Perhaps if you do the updates, X11 may work.

What software do you use?

You want to download this:
e.html>

Start up Console and see what X11 has written to the log before it quit.
That may give you some idea what's going wrong.

I think I would get rid of the Fink stuff, if I were you, and start
again from scratch. Some of the Panther binaries will be compatible with
Tiger and others not. In any case, you will need to upgrade Fink itself.

I had a similar experience with an old X11. Installing the one on the
Tiger Install CD solved the problem.

Thanks to spotlight I could find console.log easily. The situation is
weird. It says directory x11r6/ not found. I couldn't find it either. I
don't know how it disappeared.

The install cd won't let me install just x11 unless I reinstall all of
10.4.

Where I can get apple's complete x11 release, or just the directory
x11r6/ ?

Eh? Are you sure? That sounds unfamiliar. On the other hand, what would
sound very familiar is...

Did you fail to notice the X11 installer on the 10.4 install CD. It is
easy to miss, as several people (myself for one) can testify. Mount the
install CD. Then scroll the window down. It's down there below the
default vies.

The installer is in an upgrade dvd from 10.3 . As I already have 10.4,
it won't let me proceed to the step you are describing.

Another person (herapx@gmail.com) has posted similar experience: "When
I try to install x11usr.pkg, I am told that i am not allowed to do that
because newer software is already in the computer. Where? What do i do
now?" See that thread.

Eh. I didn't know there was such an animal. And I'm doutful. All the
10.4 DVD's I have seen are a full 10.4, which will either upgrade or
install anew. It would be a pain if you had to rebuild a trashed system
by first installing 10.3 and then upgrading. I've never heard anyone
have to do such a thing, as would be needed if there was an "upgrade
only" DVD.

Did you actually look on the dvd and scroll down? The only step to
proceed through is mounting the CD and scrolling down. Do *NOT* start
an install or upgrade. Just scroll down the window. Really. Try it. If
you are talking about "not getting to that step", that sure sounds like
you are trying to do an install/upgrade instead of just scrolling down
the window.

That's exactly the message I got in my 10.4 system when I tried to use
the x11usr.pkg downloaded from Apple's. The x11usr.pkg from Apple's web
site is 10.3 only (unless they have upgraded it since I last looked) and
gets *exactly* that message if you try to install it on a 10.4 system.

And I've seen several other people get the same message from installing
the x11usr.pkg from Apple. Where did you get x11.pkg if it wasn't from
the DVD? If it was from Apple's web site, that's exactly the one that I
and several others got... and we saw exactly the same message. The
solution in every case has been to install the pkg that is on the 10.4
DVD instead.

Are you running the correct copy of X11.app? I believe 10.3 placed
X11.app in /Applications, while 10.4 places it in /Applications/
Utilities. Archive-and-install may have left behind the now non-
functional 10.3 version in /Applications. Check your Utilities folder.

Great, I scrolled down the window without running anything and found
"optional installs" somewhere below and that did the trick!

You guessed right, I was running the installer and hoping at some point
I'd be offered a choice to install just one package (x11).

It was. When I couldn't install from dvd installer, I tried apple's web
site and got that package.

So, thanks again, the problem is solved.

Aquamacs 0.9.6 ( http://aquamacs.org ) works just fine on both
Panther and Tiger.
If you need a more conservative pre-configuration, try the Carbon
Emacs Package, which works on Tiger.

If you build it yourself, you'll find that the binaries generated by
the Emacs (CVS head) build process are incompatible across OS X <=
10.3.9, 10.4.0/1 and 10.4.2. Sad, but true.
