What happens if you build Emacs with checking turned on? E.g.,:
cd src
make clean
make CFLAGS='-ggdb -DENABLE_CHECKING'
or, if you want to build from scratch:
./configure --enable-checking --without-x CFLAGS='-ggdb'
make clean
make
