Sorry, I'm not understanding the distinction. The standard diagnostics=20 functions =E2=80=98message=E2=80=99, =E2=80=98error=E2=80=99, etc. all ca= ll =E2=80=98format=E2=80=99. Any of these functions=20 can run into trouble when quoting a file name that can contain arbitrary = characters. For example: (format "Moving file =E2=80=98%s=E2=80=99 to =E2=80=98%s=E2=80=99" src= dest) (message "Moving file =E2=80=98%s=E2=80=99 to =E2=80=98%s=E2=80=99" sr= c dest) (error "Cannot move file =E2=80=98%s=E2=80=99 to =E2=80=98%s=E2=80=99"= src dest) All three uses generate ambiguous output if SRC and DEST can contain arbi= trary=20 characters, and this is true even if we fiddle with the format strings=E2= =80=99 quoting=20 styles.
