Is the news source a valid nntp source? Can you paste the relevant
contents of your ~/.gnus?

For example, I use:

    (setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.gmane.org"))

or
    (setq gnus-secondary-select-methods
        (nntp "news.gmane.org"
              (nntp-stream ssl)
              (nntp-server-port 563))))
