While you're waiting for HELLO to be displayed, what's Emacs CPU consumption is? If it's more than, say, 10%, could you profile? Compile with -g or -g3 and run with: perf record -e cycles,stalled-cycles-frontend,idle-cycles-frontend -F 1000 ./src/emacs -Q then C-h h, then exit immediately after HELLO is displayed, and finally perf report --stdio If CPU consumption is just slightly above zero, try to run with 'strace -ttt' and check whether you're sleeping or blocked inside a system call.
