Yes, that makes sense.  I did that in the revised patch, which I filed
as Bug#12633 <http://bugs.gnu.org/12633>.

bugs in the history while I was at it.

These could both be done, yes.  My revised patch doesn't implement
these ideas (it just does the simpler fix), but they might be nice
add-ons.
