The change from 'wd' to 'w', and the fact that the problem does not occur with FreeBSD make, suggest a bug in GNU 'make', unfortunately. Another possibility is that something in your environment (the MAKEFILES environment variable, say) is messing up GNU make. The 'env' command should tell you that.
