It doesn't *prove* anything -- there are no *proofs* of any nontrivial Emacs code, to my knowledge -- but it's a good indication that this change is benign for the Microsoft port. That is what I'd expect from my admittedly-limited understanding of the Microsoft port, for reasons already discussed. The change is a real win for the mainline code, so this is a good sign.
