It would not. This is basic Emacs customization. Here is the code:
(defun my-backward-word ()
(interactive)
(backward-word)
(backward-char))
(global-set-key (kbd "M-b") #'my-backward-word)

I should have said: if you change "backward-word", then you break
existing code, but if you just rebind "M-b", that's fine. Existing
code depends on "backward-word", not its keybinding.
