I'm a pretty advanced and long time emacs users. But I know nothing of faces or font lock mode. I only know that when these buffers pop up they are illegible now where previously I relied on them quite heavily. M-x compile and M-x next-error make emacs historically one of the first IDE's and still one of the most powerful. There's no easy path to figuring out why or how to fix them. In effect, the modes are unavailable. I mean, they're available, but they are illegible. --rich
