Install the package ncurses-term (applicable for Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora and maybe others too but I'm not too sure). Then, $ export TERM=xterm-256color and vallah! you have 256 colours on an xterm. ;) I will be waiting for your theme update very eagerly. -- Suvayu Open source is the future. It sets us free.
