Seems a bug. With

GNU Emacs 23.1.50.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.0) of
2009-07-25 on Suse 10.3,
it doesn't occur.

Putting

(load "YOUR-PATH\python.el")

into your init file should load it.

In case of remaining difficulties, there is another python-mode, called
python-mode.el at
