It turns out this is already in Pmail. In order to use Pmail without
worrying about inflicting any damage to Rmail (RMAIL) do the following:
Copy RMAIL to PMAIL and then invoke M-x pmail with 'pmail-preserve-inbox
set to t and everything else being equal, i.e. use the same setup for
Pmail that you would for Rmail.
This will convert your PMAIL file to mbox format automagically and allow
you to test Pmail and switch back to Rmail at any point without any loss
of messages.
