My impression is that GNU/Linux has improved very much, maybe escpecially with the birth of the Ubuntu distribution. I do not run it myself, but will as soon as I find time. The crucial point IMO is letting go of the "we are best" attitude. I know of a try 20 years ago where a site at a rather big company really did its best to try out unix on the desktops. Several contacts were made with the unix vendors. They all responded "we are best and will win the market". I think if they had listened and understood the problems faced by potential customers the situation might have been totally different today.
