Fair enough. How about The usual way to set this variable is globally, through your init file or the customization buffer. However, you can set =E2=80=98version-control=E2=80=99 locally in an individual buffer to co= ntrol the making of backups for that buffer=E2=80=99s file (*note Locals::). Some packages, such as Rmail, override the global setting of =E2=80=98version-control=E2=80=99 this way. You can also have Emacs set =E2=80=98version-control=E2=80=99 locally whenever you visit a given fi= le (*note File Variables::). ? mike
