The error message could have said this of course, but it is not the 
whole story.

When I do

   C-h k Meta backspace

on w32 the help buffer tells me

    M-DEL (translated from <M-backspace>) runs the command 
backward-kill-word
      which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `simple.el'.
    It is bound to <C-backspace>, M-DEL.


Would it not be better if the error message we are talking about told me 
to bind [M-backspace] instead?
