FWIW, I was not using etc/HELLO.  IIRC, I was just using
`cd', perhaps experimenting with its history (for the
emacs-devel thread "A smarter command history".  But I'm
not sure that's when I got the crash.  HTH somehow.

I pretty much always use this font, but at various sizes (from
as tiny as 2, when a thumbnail frame, up to maybe 16, when
reading lots of text with tired eyes):

"-outline-Lucida Console-normal-normal-normal-mono-14-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1"

14 is the default size I use.
