It seems that recently highlighting is broken:
Start emacs -q and switch on cua-mode. Delete the contents of the
scratch buffer and insert a single line "foo" . It does not matter if
you end it with a newline or not. Now place point at buffer start and
select foo by hitting shift+down arrow. Then _all_ of the window is
highlighted. Moreover, if you hit shift+up arrow, then part of the
window is still highlighted and stays so until the frame is redrawn.
It seems the problem started at 2004-04-25, and I suspect the changes
src/xdisp.c to be the reason.

C-x h C-g may be a simpler demonstration case
