Try replacing the reference to lazy-lock-mode with (symbol-value
'font-lock-support-mode).

Is there a way to test if a variable even exists?

Of course: (boundp 'lazy-lock-mode)

That will help you avoid the error, but it won't solve the underlying
problem: how to correctly support font lock (fast-lock-mode,
lazy-lock-mode, jit-lock-mode, or neither).

`C-h v font-lock-support-mode' to get started.
