Hi,

So I have been testing nXhtml with rails-minor-mode on Aquamacs and
validation is not working on every <% %> tag I get : `<' that is not
markup must be entered as `<'

 I wish this would work.

Thanks for reminding me. It actually works - but only in my patched
Emacs (that is available only for w32).

Could you try replacing rng-valid.el with the one I have attached? You
need to byte compile it (otherwise the old version will be loaded).

;;; Commentary:

;; For usage information, see the documentation for rng-validate-mode.
;;
;; This file provides a minor mode that continually validates a buffer
;; against a RELAX NG schema. The validation state is used to support
;; schema-sensitive editing as well as validation. Validation is
;; performed while Emacs is idle. XML parsing is done using
;; xmltok.el. This file is responsible for checking that end-tags
;; match their start-tags. Namespace processing is handled by
;; nxml-ns.el. The RELAX NG Compact Syntax schema is parsed into
;; internal form by rng-cmpct.el. This internal form is described by
;; rng-pttrn.el. Validation of the document by matching against this
;; internal form is done by rng-match.el. Handling of W3C XML Schema
;; datatypes is delegated by rng-match.el to rng-xsd.el. The minor
;; mode is intended to be used in conjunction with the nxml major
;; mode, but does not have to be.
;;
;; The major responsibility of this file is to allow validation to
;; happen incrementally. If a buffer has been validated and is then
;; changed, we can often revalidate it without having to completely
;; parse and validate it from start to end. As we parse and validate
;; the buffer, we periodically cache the state. The state has three
;; components: the stack of open elements, the namespace processing
;; state and the RELAX NG validation state. The state is cached as the
;; value of the rng-state text property on the closing greater-than of
;; tags (but at intervals, not on every tag). We keep track of the
;; position up to which cached state is known to be correct by adding
;; a function to the buffer's after-change-functions. This is stored
;; in the rng-validate-up-to-date-end variable. The first way in
;; which we make validation incremental is obvious: we start
;; validation from the first cached state before
;; rng-validate-up-to-date-end.
;;
;; To make this work efficiently, we have to be able to copy the
;; current parsing and validation state efficiently. We do this by
;; minimizing destructive changes to the objects storing the state.
;; When state is changed, we use the old state to create new objects
;; representing the new state rather than destructively modifying the
;; objects representing the old state. Copying the state is just a
;; matter of making a list of three objects, one for each component of
;; the state; the three objects themselves can be shared and do not
;; need to be copied.
;;
;; There's one other idea that is used to make validation incremental.
;; Suppose we have a buffer that's 4000 bytes long and suppose we
;; validated it, caching state at positions 1000, 2000 and 3000. Now
;; suppose we make a change at position 1500 inserting 100 characters.
;; rng-validate-up-to-date-end will be changed to 1500. When Emacs
;; becomes idle and we revalidate, validation will restart using the
;; cached state at position 1000. However, we take advantage of the
;; cached state beyond rng-validate-up-to-date-end as follows. When
;; our validation reaches position 2100 (the current position of the
;; character that was at 2000), we compare our current state with the
;; cached state. If they are the same, then we can stop parsing
;; immediately and set rng-validate-up-to-date-end to the end of the
;; buffer: we already know that the state cached at position 3100 is
;; correct. If they are not the same, then we have to continue
;; parsing. After the change, but before revalidation, we call the
;; region from 1600 to the end of the buffer "conditionally
;; up-to-date".
;;
;; As well as the cached parsing and validation state, we also keep
;; track of the errors in the file. Errors are stored as overlays
;; with a category of rng-error. The number of such overlays in the
;; buffer must always be equal to rng-error-count.

Checks whether the buffer is a well-formed XML 1.0 document,
conforming to the XML Namespaces Recommendation and valid against a
RELAX NG schema. The mode-line indicates whether it is or not. Any
parts of the buffer that cause it not to be are considered errors and
are highlighted with face `rng-error'. A description of each error is
available as a tooltip. \\[rng-next-error] goes to the next error
after point. Clicking mouse-1 on the word `Invalid' in the mode-line
goes to the first error in the buffer. If the buffer changes, then it
will be automatically rechecked when Emacs becomes idle; the
rechecking will be paused whenever there is input pending.

By default, uses a vacuous schema that allows any well-formed XML
document. A schema can be specified explictly using
\\[rng-set-schema-file-and-validate], or implicitly based on the buffer's
file name or on the root element name. In each case the schema must
be a RELAX NG schema using the compact schema \(such schemas

Thanks. Please also try starting from "emacs -Q" the way I told before.

Thanks. It might be we are hitting an Emacs bug here, I do not know.

I just tested with CVS Emacs from 2008-05-29. When I open the file it is
opened in nxhtml-mode. This is wrong, it should be opened in multi major
mode nxhtml-mumamo.

If I do

 M-x nxhtml-mumamo

then however the fontification works ok.

So I do not get the error that you get (that is shown in the screen
shot). Could you please show the *Messages* buffer? I hope there is more
information.

The file opens with syntax highlighting intact but as soon as I change
something in the CSS code, the syntax gets messy again and doesn't come
back. (Try removing the ";" from "color: white;")

Using vacuous schema
(benchmark 1 '(mumamo-find-chunks))
Elapsed time: 0.004841s
Using schema ~/.elisp/nxml/nxml-mode-20041004/schema/xhtml.rnc
Internal nXML mode error in nxml-after-change (Wrong type argument:
number-or-marker-p, nil), degrading

This does not happen to me, unfortunately, but I think/hope I can guess
what is going on.

Can you please evaluate (symbol-plist 'after-change-functions)?

This is a buggy release, with things missing, not meant for
production use, at least on Tiger. If you have X11 on your Mac you
should try it with GNU Emacs 23.0.60 compiled for the X11 window
system. X11 for Leopard seems to be greatly improved ...

The problem is that nxml-after-change does not get deleted in this hook.
I will investigate why.

I like the way Emacs from macports looks on leopard, will the X11
version be the same ?

No. No, top menu bar (it uses an in Window menu bar). Also, of course
there are no Mac OS X key bindings. No services, etc.

Well, I know that sounds weird... but I really like the macports version
of Emacs and the integration with OS X.

Would it have the fonts and stuff ?

Fonts: maybe, stuff: yes, of course. It's ELisp stuff, isn't it?

I personally am happy with how the X11 version of Emacs 23 looks (GTK2,
with anti-alias fonts) and functions. However, I will definitely moved
to Emacs.app for GNUstep once it is ready because of "Services". It will
be cool to have Emacs services for text objects. ;-)

Emacs have access to all the fonts installed for X11.

I forgot to add that having Emacs as a service is already possible (not
the other way around) through "Terminal Service" and
emacsclient. However, having a direct Emacs service is cooler.

Here is a basic example:

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/4910/ildschirmfotoemacssnapscu4.png

Of course how it really looks is dependant on the GTK2 theme used:

http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2/

I personally use GTK2-Step:

http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2/595

Thank you. Are the fonts anti aliased too ? I mean the fonts in the
buffers not the ones in the menu bar. And how do you make it work with
anti-aliased fonts ?

Yes.

> And how do you make it work with anti-aliased fonts ?

Emacs 23 will automatically pick up the libraries for anti-alias font
during the "./configure" stage before compilation as long as you have
the libraries installed. You need the freetype2 library (truetype font
support), the xft library (anti-alias font), at the minimum. You will
need libotf for OpenType support, m17n-lib and m17n-db for good
multilingual font text shaping.

After the compilation, start emacs with the -fn argument. For example:

,----
| emacs -fn "DejaVu Sans Mono-12"
`----

This will use the DejaVu San Mono font for the buffer. You should always
pick a mono spaced font. The UI font can be defined in your ".gtkrc-2.0"
config file. For example:

,----
| gtk-font-name="Sans Serif 10"
`----

There may be precompiled binaries for Mac OS X. I don't know.

Charles

P.S. As an aside, since I have not really use Mac OS X before, I was
curious to find out how services are implemented. I came across this
article which you might be interested in:
