[C-tab] is a vector containing a single symbol, which represents the Control-tab pseudo-function key. "\C-tab" is a string containing 3 characters: Control-t, a, and b. BTW, "\C-\t" would be a string containing a single character, Control-TAB, except that only ASCII characters and Meta-modified ASCII characters can be elements of a string (see the Init Rebinding node of the Emacs manual). -- Kevin Rodgers
