It turns out that make uses the value of the SHELL macro, which defaults to "/bin/sh" (not the SHELL environment variable -- oops). My point was that the fontification of commands in a Makefile depends on their syntax, which is determined by SHELL. And that is not necessarily the same for all Makefiles.
