Certainly. Some questions:
Do we _always_ want to only check the msgstr values, or does it make
sense to check the English text as well?
I would prefer to have this automatic based on major or minor mode. I
didn't locate any po-mode library... can you send that to me to help
testing?
In my short evaluation, the following regexp seems to be an
improvement:
("^msgid" . "^msgstr")
replaced by:
("^\\(#~ \\)?msgid" . "^\\(#~ \\)?msgstr")

It doesn't really make sense to check the msgid. The msgid is a key
which is looked up by a program, where the text comes from. If the
msgid was corrected in the po-file, the result would be this entry
would never be found. Spelling checking of those would need to be
done and corrected in the source C/C++/etc. file to be meaningful.

I attach the version which comes bundled with emacs in Red Hat.
Note though, that I don't consider this work finished. PO-mode sets
the buffer in read-only mode and only allows editing of the
appropriate regions by special commands. That means I only use ispell
for checking so far, the actual correction needs a second iteration.
Karl Eichwalder suggested this solution
(defun po-ispell ()
(interactive)
(let ((buffer-read-only nil))
(ispell)))
That could be a good idea, and then binding it to some key. But that
should be done in po-mode.el rather than ispell.el.
Bruno, it is you who maintain po-mode.el now, IIRC. What do you
think?

Yes, that makes sense.

I'd recommend binding inhibit-read-only instead.

Doesn't it make more sense to keep this ispell support in po-mode.el ?
Perhaps ispell.el should provide something like an `ispell-function'
(an easy way for a major mode to replace the "normal" ispell by his own
variant such as the one above that temporarily makes the buffer writable) ?
This way po-mode.el could set ispell-function and all the ispell stuff
would just work.

Yeah, and then mail/message-mode could set it to `ispell-message'...

Thanks.

Maybe, you are right. I'll evaluate this possibility.

Yeah, and then mail/message-mode could set it to `ispell-message'...
That is a very good general idea. Would you like to do it?

It does make sense to check the msgid if you want to spell check the
original untranslated English. The corrections in the PO would be
useless but finding the errors and correcting them via a jump to source
or by sending info to MSGID_BUG_ADDRESS is very usefull.

I probably consider it better to create ispell patterns for the source
language for that purpose. And it could be a bit error prone; if the
functionality is there, it might confuse somebody into thinking the
original message could actually be FIXED in the po file.
But if someone bothers to implement this anyway, just make sure you
check EITHER the msgid OR the msgstr in a particular run, not both.
They should obviously be checked with different dictionaries.

Yes, or just enter the correction into the msgstr field and let
somebody else sort out what is the best to do with your correction :)
Either use it as an .en_US.po file or put the correction back into the
source files; ycp_puttext exists to perform such a job for ycp, the
YaST extension language.

Yes, but often there a (native) language experts who don't want to
delve into source code. They are happily spell checking .po files.

These are important points.
