You can get rid of a lot of those nil's and t's:


  (save-excursion
    (let ((beg (point)))
      (and (re-search-backward regexp nil t)
	   (= (match-end 0) beg))))

(add-hook 'shell-mode-hook
	  (lambda () (setq comint-input-ring-file nil)))
