emacs on MAC OS X 10.2

help-gnu-emacs:  I am a powerbook G4 OS X 10.2 user and am brand new to 
GNU Emacs.

To customize GNU Emacs, I have tried to create a .emacs file that is 
bug free without
success that works on the terminal.app .

What I would like to do at this time is two fold.

1.) map the arrow keys to their respective GNU Emacs commands.
1a.) preserve the C-x 1 window setting; when butchering the attempt at
        1.) the window gets split into 2.  I tried to get a macro 
inserted into
         .emacs below but it does not work

2.) map the delete-backward-char command to the "delete" key.  I could 
not so
      I chose to map to the "pipe" key instead.

Anyway, below is the butchered .emacs file so far, which needs 
attention.

Check out the documentation for define-key, i.e. C-h f define-key
For example, this is what 'up' should be (I think):

Hi Mark,


I assum you are using the pre-installed Emacs, which is rather old.
Instead you may want to get Emacs from CVS and build it yourself.
That gives you a real Aqua windowing mode and it also should fix your
arrow key problem in the terminal mode.

That's the wrong way to do it.  Emacs looks in lisp/term/foo.el if
$TERM is set to foo for the keybindings to use.  (the lisp/term/README
file has more data.)  If that file contains the wrong bindings, please
submit a bug report to the Emacs developers.  But maybe $TERM is just
set wrongly?

If you want to have it quick, try 

(define-key function-key-map (kbd "ESC O A") (kbd "<up>"))

and similar statements.  Note that the string after kbd uses the same
syntax that's produced by C-h k, C-h l and friends.
