Sorry, I was mistaken.  The changes I used came from xemacs.

Are you running on a pre-6.5.10 system without the compiler_eoe
patches?  That seems to be a factor.

Yes, using shared libraries from http://freeware.sgi.com/.  Actually we
discussed this last November when I first submitted the patch.
