Thanks to all responses.

However, it still doesn't work.

When I load a file which is latin-1, and switch 
default-buffer-file-coding-system to 'iso-latin-1-unix, it displays the 
little "1" at the bottom of the buffer, but the font doesn't display the 
other characters (umlauts, ß), but only boxes.
