And the comment in the code confirms that is one of the reasons it is
disabled by default:

   ;; Suggestion from RHOGEE, 07 Jul 1994.  Disabled, dired is still
   ;; available by "C-x C-d <pattern>", and valid filenames may
   ;; sometimes contain wildcard characters.
