The mini-window is the window that holds the minibuffer, but also the echo area. Try evaluating this with `eval-region': (let (resize-mini-windows) (message (make-string 100 100)) (sit-for 1)) (I didn't bother looking up the order of the arguments to `make-string'. 100 may be made wider than your frame if you can figure that out. ;) So: there's a reason for calling it something other than "minibuffer".
