On Windows XP, I tried `ffap' with: 
  %HOME%/.emacs.d

which i assume is similar to: (in GNU/Linux)
  $HOME/.emacs.d

ffap could open the path successfully on GNU/Linux.  

While it looks like on Windows XP, ffap also understands $HOME, but not
%HOME%.
