There are options for the server to use tcp: `server-use-tcp' (since 22.1) and to fix the port used: `server-port' (this one since 24.1. That said, do consider Tramp mode, which is really, extremely nice. Just when you visit a file, enter its path as: /ssh:my.other.system:/path/to/file It asks you for a password (or passphrase) and... voilà.
