But I think you should.  With an automatic upgrade, somebody "just
trying out" Emacs 25.1 would be going to get very upset on finding out
that their precious .emacs.desktop had suddenly been rendered unusable
with their current Emacs version.

This might be misinterpreted as a dirty trick to force people to upgrade
to Emacs 25.1.
