Well put.

Once upon a time it was fun and sportsy to pit Emacs against vi (the
generic vi -- that is vim, elvis & co, not (only9 the proprietary AT&T
vi).

At that time I was mostly vi(m) user and Emacs admirer. These days
I'm more of an Emacs user. I even remember of a paintball contest
between Emacsers & VIers (the VIers won, AFAIR).

These days, discussions between <beep> and <beep beep> feel as if
the lives of the participants and their families' depended on the
outcome. And each party seems dead set to stomp out the other
"because we're right, dammit!".

Yep, you're right.
