It is too confusing for somebody like me, who couldn't possibly remember all these variations from one document-writing session to the next. There is nothing mnemonic about any of these markups, unlike the Texinfo @emph{foo}, etc. I would find this a strong put-off to writing documentation. It would just be too much effort.
