Copy the external program's text to your window manager's clipboard;
then, in an emacs buffer, press C-y to paste the clipboard contents
into the buffer.
You may also want to have a look at
M-x describe-variable x-select-enable-clipboard RET

Clipboard access is not a new feature of emacs 23.
