Emacs 21 is rather old and is no longer supported.
Please try the latest release, Emacs 23.1.
(I think this supports larger files than 21.1 did.)

If you still have problems, please make a new bug report, that says
exactly what you did (eg, how big the file was, and what kind of file
it was), starting from `emacs -Q'.
