There is, I got many emails from people liking the backend, and
suggesting fixes and improvements. On the other hand, there was exactly
one person asking for the current default behavior.

The former sounds good to me, if people want this behavior, they can
write elisp to set the variable.

So you mean you did not change the default? (I haven't looked at the svn
changes). If you want to make sure TRT happens, please ask Tom Tromey,
he wrote that code and AFAIK he uses it daily for real work on big
source trees.
