Hm. I don't know. If you ask me personally, I'd say no, thank you very much. OTOH I do understand the "desktop folks" trying to achieve an uniform (and themeable) look across all applications. Under this premise, Emacs would have to use whatever icon set is provided by the desktop theme, which nowadays is becoming more and more a scalable one. Sorry for not giving a clear-cut answer.
