Hello,
Though the Emacs icon changed, the icon for MacOS
(i.e. mac/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/Emacs.icns)
is still old.
Mr. Kentaro Ohkouchi has kindly drawn a new icon for MacOS based on
the new Emacs icon. It is available from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.jp/macemacsjp/20046/CarbonEmacsIcon-1.0.tar.gz
He is willing to contribute this icon to GNU. Is it possible to import
this icon to the CVS tree? He'd love to sign up the ASSIGNMENT paper.

Impressive -- but why not stick to the "horns on notebook cover"
theme, to keep the resemblence with the icon on other platforms?

Impressive -- 1.5 MB compressed tar file for one icon :-)

What part of this is actually needed for MacOS?
Including 1.8 MB of eps data is not practical.

Ask RMS.

Agreed. That being said, I like this different icon very well: in
particular the GNU-horn similarity, the E/M ambiguity and the overall
polishedness are a step forward.
But to make it stick, all icons would need to be adapted, and we are
too late in the game for that. But I think that a variation of that
icon would probably be good for Emacs 23, so we should keep it in mind
and definitely ask the contributor both for an assignment, and whether
he would be willing to work on a complete set.
In the mean time, it would appear that something more in line with the
current icon design would be more appropriate for MacOS with Emacs 22.

Perhaps the "fountain pen" thing in this macos icon is a macos idiom.
Do the icons for other editors use it on macos (OS-X that is)?
Icons on OS-X _do_ usually look rather different than icons on other
systems -- they're (much) bigger, and they seem to follow various rules
that help them look consistent with others on the same platform.
I think it's perfectly appropriate to use platform-specific icons for
Emacs when they better follow a platform's style better.

Of course, it's a matter of taste. But I don't think the currect *gnu*
(not a horn on a notebook) icon is more appropriate than the horn and
pen icon for MacOS.
Anyway, to MacOS users:
If you want to use this icon with Emacs 22, the easiest way is download
the Carbon Emacs package:
http://homepage.mac.com/zenitani/emacs-e.html
Or just replace "mac/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/Emacs.icns" with the
"Emacs.icns" file in the tar ball. And "make".

Hello,
This request was made in May 2006 but it is pending since people were
busy for preparation of the release of Emacs 22.1. Because Emacs 22.1
has been released, it's high time to remind this request.
Mr. Ohkouchi made a nice Emacs icon for MacOS. (I don't know it can be
used for Windows also.)
It is availabe from:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.jp/macemacsjp/26020/CarbonEmacsIcons-2.0.tar.gz
To install the icon, just replace
emacs-22.1/mac/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/Emacs.icons with the one
in this tar ball.
Since Mr. Ohkouchi does not speak English well, the documents in this
tar ball are written in Japanese. Please feel free to ask questions in
English to me.
The "Carbon Emacs package" adopts this icon. If you download the
package and open it and run the Emacs, you can see the current version
of the icon very easily:
http://homepage.mac.com/zenitani/emacs-e.html
Again, please consider to include new icons to the Emacs main tree in
this time.

thanks! i was able to download and unpack the tarball using the latest
url. the icons look very nice (i don't have a mac so i looked at the
eps and png files). now i have some questions:
- in the tarball, i see Emacs.icns and document.icns -- is it sufficient
to overwrite the current Emacs.icns and add document.icns in the same
directory?
- what about the other files in the tarball?
- do any other (non-.icns) existing files need to be updated to
reference the new icon files?
- i did not see Mr. Ohkouchi in any of the ChangeLog files or in the
top-level AUTHORS file. this probably means we need to ask him to
assign copyright on to the FSF. has that process already begun?
- can you send me a mac to test?
haha, just kidding for the last question.

Please override Emacs.icns.
And please add document.icns to the same directory.
> - what about the other files in the tarball?
It's source files of the icon files. We don't need to include them
into the Emacs tree.
> - do any other (non-.icns) existing files need to be updated to

Yes.
To use document.icns (for ".el" for instance),
"emacs/mac/Emacs.app/Contents/Info.plist" should be modified.
You can refer to
http://svn.sourceforge.jp/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/zenitani/CarbonEmacs/Resources/?root=macwiki#dirlist
Note that this Info.plist was written by Mr. Zenitani.

No.
I should ask Mr. Ohkouchi and Mr. Zenitani to do it.
I tried to find a page which describes how to assign copyright to the
FSF, but I couldn't find. Please give me the URL.
