This only works if you set modifyOtherKeys to 1 and iff you have a new
enough xterm (after 216). This didn't work with xterm-extras.el

  > 'M-S-up'  => inserts 'A'

Does it do that if you start from emacs -Q? 
Can you show the result of C-q M-S-up   ?
(My window manager uses M-S-up so I can't test that one).
