Hi All. I'm looking for a precompiled "latest and greatest" stable cvs
for Windows. Is there a recent precompiled version sitting around? I'm
currently using a precompiled cvs version from April 2005.

Thanks.
Javier

I tried and plan to switch to EmacsW32. It's latest version at the moment
is 06-Jan-2006
(http://ourcomments.org/Emacs/DL/EmacsW32+Emacs/Emacs-from-CVS/patched/).

Unfortunately its "latest version info" seems to be outdated in
http://ourcomments.org/Emacs/EmacsW32.html (tells 060101);
and in
http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/EmacsW32 (tells 2005-12-09) (?)
and in
http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/CategoryWThirtyTwo (tells 2005-09-27)
(?).

Thanks, Klaus. I am right to conclude that

emacs+auctex-w32-2006-01-29.zip

will unzip to the latest precompiled binary(s)? Has leim been included in
this or is that still a separate package? Is there any reason I might not
want this as opposed to

emacs+auctex-w32-2005-12-19.zip

for example? Were any important changes made in those 6 weeks?

Thanks,

Ed.

Thanks Peter and sorry for the mess! I have tried to clean up the
information.

The latest version uploaded are now 2006-02-01 for the patched version
and 2006-01-31 for the unpatched version.

But, what about ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/windows/ ?
Why are the timestamps of files are still */*/2004 ?
Is there any other place where native emacs and emacs w32 is being placed ?
For native emacs - emacs-21.4a.tar.gz, it is 2/17/2005 ?
Why is this happening ?

Because that's how old the actual Official released versions are.

ALL the more recent versions are NOT released...
They are build from CVS and are pre-release / alpha / beta software.

That said, for me, they are quite stable and I used them very day.

I don't think there has every been an "official" release of
version 21.4a for windows..

I have long since moved onto the bleeding edge.

The files you mention are for the released version of Emacs. I have
compiled the not yet released but very stable code for w32 and uploaded
that. (This is often called "CVS Emacs", since the sources are in a CVS
repository.)

You mean to say the last release of Emacs w32 was 3/10/2004
and that of native Emacs was 2/17/2005 at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/ ?
If so, why is this ?
Why the Emacs is not being released say for every quarter / half month ?
I am surprised ...

Not the latest, but those as of 2006-01-29.

Included.

Depends very much on _your_ definition of "important". IIRC, the
differences between the 2006-01-29 and 2005-12-19 are rather minor.
If you don't have one installed yet, pick the newest.

Look at the ChangeLog files, if you need to know details. Here is an
URL. You may replace "/lisp" by "", "/src", ... to see the various
ChangeLog files:

http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/emacs/emacs/lisp/ChangeLog?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/plain

Bye, Reiner.

Do they include the C and Lisp sources? (I cannot unpack the *.exe
files on GNU/Linux and I didn't find this information when browsing
the server yesterday? If not, you must provide the sources too as
required by the GPL.

See <news:v9wtg8ef9y.fsf@marauder.physik.uni-ulm.de> and
<news:85acd45r9q.fsf@lola.goethe.zz> in comp.emacs.

It is possible that the newer one does not have working mouse-1 links
in gnus article buffers. Very annoying, that. The later however
includes a newer version of AUCTeX IIRC.

Time we got another version out...

Because fixes for compiling on Windows with modern versions of
gcc/mingw32 that were in the Emacs 21 branch of CVS did not make it into
the 21.4 releases.

For those that does not need AUCTex there is a new unpatched version
from 2006-02-17 compiled for w32 at

Because we lack volunteers to come on board and help with maintaining
the huge package that Emacs is. Please consider this as an invitation
to help us out.

Use the same URL via the HTTP protocol:

Correction: In the announcement for 2006-01-29, Ralf wrote about some
problem with images in the 2005-12-19 version. jpg, png? I don't
remember. Maybe Ralf could add a CHANGES-w32 file on alpha.gnu.org
summarizing the major changes?

Do you refer to [1,2]? For me, it was quite a minor problem. I
wasn't even able to reproduce this bug after Piet's first report. A
simple workaround is to click into in the article before clicking on
the link. Or use mouse-2. Bug [3] (introduce when fixing [1,2]) was
much more annoying to me.

No, both contain AUCTeX 11.82 (cf. RELEASE-2006-01-29.txt).

On GNU/Linux several people including me had some crashes (see
emacs-devel / emacs-pretest-bug). I'm not sure if its fixed. But
maybe it's not relevant for w32.

Thanks for the invitation, Eli.
It's my pleasure to work for GNU.
Sure, i will help for Emacs and GNU growth with my capabilities.
I am a novice person in these tasks, as similarly how i was
in maintaining the Emacs w32 FAQ :).
Please get me the details of the tasks.
Looking forward to work with the team, GNU.

i made this point not for my Emacs enjoyment.
If a system is not being released early from it's previous releases,
the users (novice / experienced) from FOSS world and proprietary world (more),
lose interest in that particular system, because the first impression the
user gets is, the system development is not active / outdated.
Do we need this ?
We need to get more and more users from closed source domain world also.

For e.g. If a novice user from proprietary world
wants to just taste FOSS world system, he won't be
having enough patience as much as experienced FOSS user to get from
CVS, compile, etc - the latest version of the system, which is not
yet released officially.

So, at the first place if we make an good impression of the system,
we hit the target half way through in getting more users, especially from
proprietary world.

My half cents :).

when emacs runs fine, that is when you perceive quality. when emacs crashes
or misbehaves, that is when you perceive lack of (or low) quality. any other
perception of quality is an indirect one. (according to pirsig, with whom i
agree for the most part.)

yes, and drescher wishes the toaster to be happy, too.

in losing interest, they lose the opportunity to enjoy emacs, but gain the
opportunity to suffer for their prejudice.

> Do we need this ?

personally, i only need bug reports every once in a while. people losing
interest and therefore not using emacs do not impact my emacs enjoyment.

everyone has their path and their method of plo{tt,dd}ing along it.

and yet they have patience to endure unseen conju{g,r}ations of their
cpu over their data and disk. perhaps this can lead to more patience.

on the other hand, if people realize that proprietary world is bizarre
and far from home, they may return to us, eventually, having grown tired
of the forced vacation. the first impression has already been made and
lost for these people -- it is their lot to rediscover this.

The first step would be to set up a development environment where you
can build Emacs, then download the CVS version and build it. After
that, look in the file admin/FOR-RELEASE for the urgent tasks, and in
etc/TODO for more long-term ones. Searching for "TODO" and "FIXME" in
src/w32*.c will show some Windows-specific jobs that await volunteers.
Finally, subscribe to emacs-devel@gnu.org where you will read about
issues that need to be taken care of, on a day-to-day basis.

TIA

Duh. Ignorant I am. Thanks Eli.

Actually, I was thinking of this binary (I wrote the wrong URL before):
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/auctex/. I tried http://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/auctex,
but that just times out ("server unreachable"). Likewise for
http://alpha.gnu.org/.

How can I get to this binary via http? Thx.

I don't think you can: alpha.gnu.org doesn't have the http gateway.
Sorry.

Of course, if you can find a proxy that doesn't mind you logging in via
http and itself requesting using the ftp protocol, you're quids in.

There's quite a long list of public proxies on e.g. proxyblind.org,
although you might want to check legality of using them. Fortunately, my
university allows virtually all ports (except bit torrent, unsurprisingly)
