is there some minor mode that will display the function name I'm in 
on the mode line ?

Yup. M-x which-func-mode RET.

this is already a complete answer but just for bringing another idea:
using ECB offers you the same information in another way and on top much
more...see screenshots on http://ecb.sf.net...
