I just do but I want to test other emacs mails modes. Rmail is
one of them and the oldest one AFAIK. I want to know why there so
many people still using it nowadays.

Hmm... I picked gnus the first day I started using emacs. I have
never had a chance to explore RMail. As stated in emacswiki:

"Rmail is the primary Emacs mail-reader. I don't know how many people
currently use it, but I will ignore any suggestion to treat it as
unimportant." -- RMS

I'm curious if it's capable of dealing large volume mailing lists.

It's seems to me vm is more able to deal with large mailboxes than rmail.

Rmail is simple to use, but does not do fancy things like mail
splitting.  If you need stuff like that, use gnus.

Or procmail.

I use both MH-E (http://mh-e.sf.net/) and Gnus myself.

Somewhere I read that procmail doesn't work perfectly with mh-e
... wrong?  AFAIK it is said that the indexing doesn't work - therefor I
never used procmail.

I think you meant "locking" instead of "indexing."

I use procmail locking to keep multiple copies of rcvstore from stepping
on each other and rely on rcvstore to keep from stepping on invocations
of MH from the command line. For example:

  :0 w: mh-e$LOCKEXT
  * ^From mh-e-(announce|devel|users)-admin@lists.sourceforge.net
  | bwrcvstore -create +lists/mh-e

If it isn't "perfect", it's good enough. I haven't noticed any mail
getting clobbered in the nearly 20 years I've been using this.

I've attached the bwrcvstore script.

first, i use wanderlust. but the concept of "labels" in rmail is
something that's quite modern, compare it the "tags" in gmail and
del.icio.us.

I wonder if there are "many people" using it.
I only use it because I have many archival mailboxes 
in BABYL file format going back 25 years.

At the place where Emacs was invented, we had already replaced RMAIL
with BABYL, and then with something much more powerful, all 25 years ago.
But the superior technology is no longer available -- long story -- and
I'm not thrilled with any of the other Emacs-based mail handling systems
like Gnus (which I do use for newsgroups).  So when the day came, I just
exported my mail files into BABYL format and sadly dropped back to RMAIL.
RMAIL lacks many features, but it's been adequate.

huge-traffic-mailing-list.

Do you have special configurations ? Is there some sort of
auto-splitting/filtering on header I may have not seen ?

Well, you can use multiple inboxes which get their mail from different
places if you wish.  C-u M-x rmail RET will prompt you for a mailbox
(you can choose a new, non-existing one here) to open, and once you're
in one, you can use M-x set-rmail-inbox-list to say what mailspools this
mailbox should read from.

This of course means you need to set up your mail to be split into
several spools via procmail or similar.

This is a nice solution but I just discovered C-M-t and friends and also labels.
My problem is I read my mails from one and only one mailspool (/var/mail/zedek as
asked to fetchmail).

Well I will try to live as is.

I have another trouble : when pressing m, I end up into a Message buffer and not into a mail-mode
buffer. What should I tweak to use the default mail-mode ?

The variable `mail-user-agent' tells emacs what to use for composing
mail.  To get mail-mode which is the default BTW, set it to
sendmail-user-agent
