Did that - even removed .Xresources and logged in - no change.  Exactly
the same output.

The printer does print out Umlauts ... there is a message right BEFORE
printing:  "Fonts for some characters not found, continue anyway ..."
so I suppose it's not the printer.

Ah, ok, but then there must be a table or whatever to check out ... no?

I don't like to feel like a stupid ... :-( <sigh>
