Just run

make maintainer-clean && ./configure && make bootstrap

As the error messages indicate, you need to remove those old .elc
files. Unfortunately, `make bootstrap' does not do this automatically
any more.

Sincerely,

Luc.

Try maintainer-clean.

Andreas.

How about if we tell about "make maintainer-clean" in INSTALL.CVS, or
mention removing *.elc files (or both)? The current text is only good
for someone who have just extracted a fresh CVS tree.

Hm. Sorry if I lost a past discussion here, but I think that
having a single make target that removes old .elc files and does
bootstrapping would be useful.

Here is the comment in Makefile, which apparently is not any more
consistent with the actual behaviour:

  #### Bootstrapping.

  ### This is meant for Emacs maintainers only. It first cleans the
  ### lisp subdirectory, removing all compiled Lisp files. Then a
  ### special emacs executable is built from Lisp sources, which is then
  ### used to compile Lisp files. The last step is a "normal" make.

Let me repeat my proposal that 'make bootstrap' should do maintainer-clean.

We could then make a new target 'make bootfast' or something which
skips the maintainer-clean for those who know what they are doing
(i.e. they will not ask for help when it fails.)

If we decide not to revert the change, then we should indeed properly
document it. But as Kim pointed out, the first question is whether we
want to restore the old (still documented) behavior of `make bootstrap'.

Sincerely,

Luc.

Let me repeat my proposal that 'make bootstrap' should do maintainer-clean.

There is a target in src/Makefile called bootstrapclean, but it looks
like bootstrapping does not use it; nothing seems to use it.
Bootstrapping uses mostlyclean instead.

We could make bootstrapping use bootstrapclean, and then make
bootstrapclean clean exactly the right files for that purpose.
Does anyone see an objection?

So the right question is, which files shoud it delete, and which not?

Which of these files should it delete, and why?

	rm -f epaths.h config.h Makefile Makefile.c config.stamp stamp-oldxmenu ../etc/DOC-*
	mv ./.gdbinit ./.gdbinit.save

Mostly agreed, with the following caveat:
don't just change `bootstrap'. Instead, rename the current `bootstrap'
to `bootstrap-build' and than create a new `bootstrap' which first does
`bootstrapclean' and then `bootstrap-build'.
