Emacs by default requests a selection of type COMPOUND_TEXT. It seems that xterm, on responding to it, encodes U+201C into a character of japanese-jisx0208. It itself is not a bug because that that character can be mapped to U+201C according to glibc's charset mapping table. Please try this: (setq x-select-request-type '(UTF8_STRING COMPOUND_TEXT TEXT STRING)) Then Emacs requests a selection of type UTF8_STRING at first. > And then, Gnus complains (thus I'll remove the offening character for > posting): > Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "Non-character input-event") > read-char() > byte-code("=C2=8A=08=C2=84=C3=90=00=C3=86=C3=87 =C3=88=C3=89\n=C3=8A#= =C3=8BP#=C2=88=C3=8C =C2=89=10\n=C2=9E=C2=84=01=00=C3=8D=10=C3=8E=C3=8F!=13= =C3=90=0B!=C2=88=C3=91 =C2=88=C3=92 =C2=88=C3=93 =C2=88 =C3=94=C2=B1=02=C2= =88=C3=95\n=C2=89\f=C2=86:=00=C3=96=C3=97=C3=8D=C2=89=C2=89=C2=89=1D=1E =1E= !=1E\"=1E#=1C=1E$=1E%=1E&=0E%=C2=83q=00\f=0E%@8G=16\"=0E&=0E\"V=C2=84h=00= =0E\"=16&=0E%A=C2=89=16%=C2=84T=00=0E&=C3=98\\=16&=C3=99 S=0E&=C2=A5=16\"= =C3=99 S=0E\"=C2=A5=16!=0E$=C2=83=C3=8B=00=0E#=0E\"W=C2=84=C2=9E=00=C3=97= =16#=C3=9A=C3=95!=C2=88=C3=9Bc=C2=88=0E!=C3=9CZ=16 =C3=9D=C3=9E=0E !=C3=9FQ= =15=C3=85=0D=0E$=C2=89=1E'@@)\f=0E$@8#c=C2=88=0E$A=16$=0E#T=16#=C2=82=C2=87= =00. =C2=82=01=00)=C3=8D=C2=87" [tchar prompt choice buf idx format message= "%s (%s): " mapconcat #[(s) "=C3=81=08@!=C2=87" [s char-to-string] 2] ", "= ", ?" read-char nil get-buffer-create "*Gnus Help*" pop-to-buffer fundamen= tal-mode buffer-disable-undo erase-buffer ":\n\n" -1 1 0 4 window-width del= ete-char "\n" 3 "%c: %-" int-to-string "s" pad width n i alist list max x] = 10) > gnus-multiple-choice("Non-printable characters found. First of all, it doesn't have the function gnus-multiple-choice. --- Ken'ichi HANDA handa@m17n.org
